Description
Professor Monika Moscibrodzka from Radboud University in the Netherlands will be the featured speaker at the Russell Frank Astronomy Lecture Series. Her talk is titled, "Seeing the unseeable: Taking the first ever photo of a black hole."
On April 10, 2019, scientists presented the first image of a black hole, using observations of the center of the galaxy M87. The image shows a bright ring formed as light bends in the intense gravity around a black hole that is 6.5 billion times more massive than the Sun. This image opens a new window onto the study of black holes. In this talk, Moscibrodzka will tell you how this picture was made and what it means for astrophysics.
This talk is intended for a general audience, including enthusiasts of all backgrounds and ages.
