The Student Union Art Gallery presents“Vegas Stars Playing Cards”

As a world leader in gaming and entertainment, Las Vegas has never really had a deck of playing cards that celebrated those features. The standard deck of cards used in casino table games is based on a traditional French design, with the pips, hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades, that made its way into England, and then to the U.S.

With the Vegas Stars Playing Cards, the design has been changed out and replaced with objects more in keeping with Las Vegas such as dice, chips, tourist party cups, and the star from the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign. And the face cards focus on key elements of Vegas’ industry by using entertainers, casino workers, food & beverage servers, and a nod to neon signs as design components.

The deck was created in the Fall of 2017 by 40 students from ART 333, Photography for Graphic Designers, and ART 347, Commercial Photo, both taught by Checko Salgado. Students were required to create their own props, use studio lighting, and work with models. The goal was to make each individual card a work of art. The next phase of this project is a true deck of cards.
