This workshop is part of our Grad Rebel Appreciation Week, which celebrates the incredible contribution that graduate students make to the mission of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas through their efforts in research, service, and teaching.
Research has shown that reading with a purpose and active mindset leads to retention of more information for a longer time period. Active reading, at the most fundamental level, refers to an active process of questioning that helps one determine what one’s needs are and whether the material is worth reading in the first place; then, it provides a context and framework for learning.
By attending this workshop, you will learn skills that will eventually become habits to improve your reading and comprehension. Some of the immediate differences this workshop will make in your academic life include:
- You will better understand conventional structures of text.
- You will better understand the mechanics of reading with an active stance; i.e., critical and strategic reading.
- You will read faster, comprehend better, and retain longer.
- You will develop self-awareness, self-control, flexibility and choice, and purpose when reading.
