Certificate Programs

Certificate programs in ELC provide students with a marketable skill endorsement in English language proficiency as well as an alternative pathway for admission into a UNLV major.

Admission Requirements

Students wanting to earn certificates in English language proficiency must first take the Michigan Placement Test (MPT). Scores will be used for placement into either the Advanced English Proficiency Certificate (APC) or the Academic English Certification (AEC).

Advanced English Proficiency Certificate (AEP)

The Advanced English Proficiency Certificate consists of 14-15 credits in English language studies, with 12 of the credits in required courses and 2-3 credits in elective courses. This program may be completed in one semester.

Certificate of Academic Proficiency in English (CAP)

The certificate in Academic Proficiency in English consists of 15 credits in advanced English language studies, with 12 of the credits in required courses and 3 credits in elective courses. This program may be completed in one semester. Completion of this certificate with a GPA of 3.2 results in a waiver of the TOEFL or MTELP.
