Master of Education/Master of Science - Curriculum & Instruction; Elementary Science

The Department of Teaching & Learning holds as its central mission the preparation and development of educators at all levels. The department ensures that its professional education programs are based on essential knowledge, established and current research findings, and sound professional practice. The Department offers a M.Ed. in 17 areas of concentration as well as a M.S. in 13 of those areas. The master's degree consists of required core courses coupled with courses specifically related to the area of concentration. A culminating experience or thesis concludes the degree and provides evidence of the knowledge, skills, and dispositions gained while in the program.

Upon completion of this program, graduates will be able to:

  • Correlate the components required for developing elementary science curricula.
  • Analyze a science topic using established rubrics.
  • Demonstrate the ability to analyze the components of several elementary science curriculum programs.
  • Demonstrate the ability to develop a coherent curriculum framework.
  • Demonstrate collaborative skills for professional development.
  • Create and implement a unit of instruction in an elementary science topic that is informed by research and follows research-based, inquiry methods.
  • Demonstrate the ability to integrate technology into elementary science teaching.
  • Demonstrate the ability to understand the historical and cultural development of scientific knowledge and scientific endeavor.
