Resuming On-Campus Operations and Instruction

UNLV’s commitment to its mission as a public research university remains constant. UNLV is thoughtfully and carefully resuming on-campus operations over several stages with procedures that maintain social distancing and mitigate risk.

UNLV will carry out a coordinated, multistep approach to resuming on-campus operations and courses informed by guidance from public health officials, in compliance with government directives, and in coordination with the Nevada System of Higher Education.

Individuals at higher risk of severe illness per CDC guidelines, primary caretakers of individuals at higher risk per CDC guidelines, and those without childcare or eldercare because of COVID-19 may request an accommodation to extend administrative leave or remote work during UNLV’s first step of resumption of university operations.

Guiding Principles and Expectations

Contingent on Governor Steve Sisolak’s Directives, and in conjunction with the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE), UNLV is preparing for resuming in-person operations in early June 2020. The schedule and specific actions are subject to change.

As UNLV slowly resumes in-person operations, we will implement procedures to maintain social distancing and mitigate risk. Everyone has a shared responsibility to protect themselves and others.

Guiding Principles

What You Can Expect From UNLV

  • Providing two (2) cloth face coverings to all employees
  • Providing personal size hand sanitizer to all employees
  • Installation of hand sanitizer dispensers in buildings across campus
  • Providing sanitizing wipes to departments for cleaning personal work spaces 
  • Enhanced cleaning: disinfection of touchpoints in high traffic areas
  • Use of hospital-grade disinfectants that are effective against COVID-19
  • Advice on adapting work space design to support social distancing
  • Implementation of industry COVID-19 best practices for air filtration and HVAC systems
  • Adjustment of schedules to promote flexibility and social distancing

What UNLV Expects From Everyone On Our Campuses

  • Pre-arrival each day:
    • Take your temperature
    • Complete the COVID-19 Assessment on the RebelSAFE App
    • Stay home if you have a fever or other symptoms, and seek medical care if you have COVID-19 symptoms
  • While on campus:
    • Wear a face covering when outside of your office or when interacting with others (if you forget your face covering, a limited supply will be available on campus)
    • Maintain physical distance of six feet from others
    • Frequently wash your hands for 20 seconds with soap and water
    • If soap and water are unavailable, use hand sanitizer of at least 60% alcohol
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
    • Be mindful of your surroundings and avoid crowding into spaces

Additional Expectations of All Employees

  • Develop a plan to clean and wipe down commonly touched surfaces
  • Minimize contact – meet virtually, do curbside pickup for customers
  • Some employees in areas such as facilities and health care will have a higher level of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirement as determined by their unit leader
  • Stay home if you are sick and seek medical care if you have COVID-19 symptoms
  • If you test positive for COVID-19, consider voluntarily reporting the result to your immediate supervisor

What UNLV Expects from Unit Leaders

  • Develop phased plans to bring employees back to campus in a safe and reasonable manner, which may include staggered start times and break times
  • Provide plans to employees and to their supervising authorities
  • Maintain flexibility and be prepared to adjust as the situation requires

UNLV Task Force

The institutional response to the COVID-19 crisis been managed by a campus-wide task force known as the Incident Management Team (IMT).  Chaired by Chris Heavey, Interim Executive Vice President and Provost, it consists of approximately three dozen representatives from major administrative and academic units across the university.

IMT has established working groups to focus on specific aspects of resuming university operations and in-person instruction.

The following groups are developing guidelines and protocols that apply university-wide, identifying which decisions will be made at the unit-level, and reviewing unit activity plans for resuming on-campus operations.
