One of the key roles of the Provost is identifying and developing campus leaders who are capable of guiding the University toward its identified goals. Whether campus leaders serve in administrative positions or lead from their positions as academic faculty and researchers, identifying and developing them aids the University and ensures its future. To that end and with the specific goals of (1) reducing our overreliance on associate professors for key administrative positions, and (2) increasing the representation of women and minority faculty in various leadership positions, the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost will undertake a proactive, inclusive, and engaged approach to the development of future campus leaders at UNLV. This initiative will take the form of a Leadership Development Program, one aspect of which is a Leadership Development Academy.

Brief Description of the Academy

The Leadership Development Academy will consist of two components: (1) a curriculum of approximately four to six seminars per semester related directly to prominent higher education issues and UNLV specific challenges, and (2) an administrative placement that will involve direct contact with a senior administrator. It is expected that the academy fellow will work on a specific project as part of that placement. Due to the intensive nature of the program, the number of academy fellows will be limited to four to six per year. Academic faculty fellows will have at least two senior administrative placements throughout the year, and will be granted a one-course workload reassignment for each regular semester of the year-long academy. Administrative faculty fellows, due to their more restrictive schedules, will have at least one senior administrative placement (total of 64 hours for the year), which will be scheduled on an individual basis and in accordance with a negotiated agreement between the provost’s office, the fellow, and the fellow’s supervisor. In all cases, the number and nature of placements and projects will be tailored to individual fellows to the extent practicable.

Applicant Requirements

Academic and administrative faculty are eligible to apply for the Leadership Development Academy. Academic faculty applicants must be tenured and hold at least the rank of associate professor. Faculty-in-Residence applicants must have at least six years of service to UNLV. Administrative faculty applicants must have held the status of administrative faculty for at least two years, and must have at least six years of service to UNLV. Preference will be given to applicants whose curricula vitae or résumés reflect a high level of scholarship and/or strong potential for higher-level leadership.

  • Two letters of professional recommendation.
  • Personal statement of two to three pages that articulates (a) your vision for the role of universities in communities, (b) what you believe is the greatest challenge facing universities and how UNLV should engage that challenge, and (c) how UNLV should respond specifically to Southern Nevada’s changing economy and demographics.
