The Center for Academic Enrichment and Outreach (CAEO) is pleased to announce that the U.S. Department of Education has awarded a TRIO Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) grant to UNLV. Therefore, UNLV will become host to Southern Nevada’s first ever VUB project. The grant is funded for approximately $1.4 million over five years (2022-27) and will serve annually more than 125 participants with each participant being a U.S. military veteran who has not enrolled in postsecondary education and who is a low-income individual and/or potential first-generation college student. The primary goal of the program is to increase the rate at which veterans enroll in and complete postsecondary education programs. The VUB grant will be housed and administered by CAEO under the leadership of William W. Sullivan, associate vice president for retention and outreach, and executive director, CAEO.
Veteran Upward Bound is designed to motivate and assist participants in the development of academic and other skills necessary for acceptance to and success in postsecondary degree and certificate programs. Key VUB services/activities include (but are not limited to) assessment and enhancement of academic basic skills; counseling; mentoring; tutoring; academic instruction in mathematics through pre-calculus, laboratory science, foreign language, composition and literature; and short-term remedial or refresher courses for veterans who are high school graduates but have delayed pursuing postsecondary education. VUB also assists participants in securing support services from the Veterans Administration, state veterans’ agencies, veteran associations, and other state and local agencies that serve veterans.
Thank you to all of our supporters of CAEO over the past 12 months as we pursued funding during this and other competitions.
