Nancy Uscher speaking at Hall of Fame at UNLV
Jan. 20, 2023

As we begin our spring 2023 semester, I am particularly excited about the future for our College of Fine Arts at UNLV. We are soon going to complete the planning document that will guide us for the next five years – 2023-2028. This plan will provide a framework for the rich, creative, innovative and inventive prospects in front of our college in the years ahead – for our students, faculty and staff.  We are building on the great work that was presented at our Creative Collaborations event in November, as faculty continue to work together to create knowledge and celebrate the role of the arts in society. Our faculty enrich the lives of students every single day. Our students, through the high impact, inspirational and experiential education they receive at UNLV, are poised to go out into the world and change it in very positive ways through their transferrable skills and their chosen careers in the arts. They will be vital members of the workforce, significantly and strategically influencing the creative economy of Nevada and beyond. We see this strong trajectory and engagement in our successful alumni in all of the academic disciplines of the college.  A number of our students are already working professionals, as well.

We have many adventures ahead this semester!  Of course, we have dozens of forthcoming events in the visual and performing arts, film, architecture, entertainment engineering and design, and in our Barrick Museum of Art and at the Performing Arts Center on campus. We will continue our robust partnerships with a number of cultural organizations in Las Vegas, nationally and internationally, and are so very grateful to our partners for supporting a range of endeavors to benefit our students and help us realize our aspirations and dreams.  We will soon announce innovation awards available to students, the hosting of a national competition in the arts, and we are moving forward to support a pilot for interdisciplinary innovation teams – a cornerstone for our future. Moreover, we are hard at work creating our inaugural “The UNLV College of Fine Arts Around the World” project for summer 2023, to support selected groups of faculty and students who will travel to perform, exhibit and create original work in locations throughout the globe. We strongly believe that these opportunities will be life-changing for our students. We continue to collaborate with the university and the Nevada community in preparation to construct our new and stunning College of Fine Arts building, led by the visual arts and inclusive of all the arts, on the UNLV campus.

These are some of the highlights ahead of us for the semester.  I want to thank each and every one of you for the stellar contributions you make to UNLV. I believe it is essential for everyone to have encouragement for whatever it is that makes you feel vital and alive as humans, artists and educators.

Please know that you have my deepest support and admiration. I wish all of you an incredible and joyous spring semester!

Warm wishes,

Nancy J. Uscher
