Rebels Have Record 147 Earn Scholar-Athlete Award
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV Athletics had a record 147 student-athletes earn the 2020-21 Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Award, the Conference announced Thursday. The previous high was 92, which was set last year (2019-20).
To be eligible for the 2020-21 Scholar-Athlete Award, student-athletes must have completed at least two semesters or three quarters at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better. The athletic contribution/participation requirement has been omitted for this award this year due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to multiple programs earning all-time highs.
Nine programs set records, with track & field (23 representatives), women's soccer (20), women's swimming & diving (19), football (14), cross country (13), softball (11), volleyball (11), women's tennis (seven), and men's basketball (five) surpassing previous bests. Baseball had 14 earn the award to tie the program's output from one year ago.
Additionally, women's golf had four student-athletes qualify for the award, while women's basketball (three), men's tennis (two) and men's golf (one) rounded out the Rebel sports sponsored by the MW. Overall, a Conference-record 1,351 student-athletes earned the award, which included 198 individuals who achieved a 4.00 cumulative grade point average. The previous MW best was 1,023 set in 2019-20.
2020-21 ACADEMIC YEAR: The Scarlet & Gray had a total of 313 student-athletes earn Academic All-MW Team honors this year: 70 for Fall 2020 (football) and 243 for Spring 2021. Additionally, UNLV had 26 student-athletes earn 2020-21 Academic All-WAC, as 14 were recognized from men's swimming & diving and 12 more from men's soccer.
In addition, the department achieved a collective semester GPA of at least 3.0 for a record eighth straight time. Prior to the Fall 2017 semester, UNLV student-athletes have never achieved a collective semester GPA of 3.0.
