The Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost announces the selection of Lisa Menegatos, Ph.D., as the new dean of the UNLV Honors College, effective June 1, 2023. Menegatos will succeed Dean Andrew Hanson, who is set to retire this summer.

The Honors College is a small, selective college within the university that offers enhanced academic experiences for highly motivated undergraduate students. Promoting a culture of intellectual curiosity and innovation, the college supports learning communities that foster diverse perspectives, spark creative thinking, and cultivate engaged citizenship. This approach encourages students to explore a broad array of disciplines and to follow their unique academic interests.

In her new role as dean, Menegatos will draw upon her extensive experience in undergraduate education to further enrich the academic environment and student experience for Honors students at UNLV.

“With a wealth of expertise in her field, Dr. Menegatos has played a vital role in shaping Honors education at UNLV,” said Executive Vice President and Provost Chris L. Heavey. “Lisa’s dedication to our students and her commitment to undergraduate learning will undoubtedly drive the Honors College to even greater heights.”

Menegatos joined the Honors College as an assistant professor in residence in fall 2014. She became assistant dean in January 2018 and then associate dean in July of that year. Her tenure in the college has seen the enhancement of the Honors thesis program, the student internship program, and faculty development initiatives.

“I am deeply honored and excited about this new role,” said Menegatos. “I am eager to collaborate with our talented faculty, dedicated staff, and amazing students in enhancing the Honors College’s commitment to academic excellence and comprehensive student support.”

President Keith E. Whitfield also expressed his enthusiasm for the appointment. “Dr. Menegatos has demonstrated a clear understanding of the university’s mission, and her strong track record of leadership will undoubtedly bring immense benefits to the Honors College. I’m thrilled to anticipate the evolution and growth of the college under her thoughtful and energetic leadership.”

Before coming to UNLV, Menegatos was an assistant professor at Purdue University, Fort Wayne. Menegatos earned her Ph.D. from Arizona State University, specializing in health communication and interpersonal communication. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from Syracuse University and a master's degree in communication studies from UNLV.
