Closing Event 

Join us for two days of joy and reflection as the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art says goodbye to all of its current exhibitions. 

We’ll stay open late on the evening of Friday, January 27th to acknowledge our artists and hear readings of new poems by local poets Ashley Vargas and Yesenia Moya Garay. These poems were created in response to the stories of familial relationships and personal transformation in the visionary exhibition Two Cultures, One Family: Building Family, Finding Home, curated by Dr. Erika Abad. The acknowledgements will start at 5 p.m. and the galleries will be open until 6 p.m.

The following day, Saturday, January 28th, will be the final opportunity to see Making Room, Meanwhile, a few feet away from you …, Notes for Tomorrow, Two Cultures, One Family, and “Untitled” (L.A.), as well as the Barrick’s pop-up collaboration with a group of local high school art students, Untitled (Valley High School). 

January 28th is also the only day to experience Circle of Introspective Agency, a new community engagement piece facilitated by The Neon Museum’s current artist-in-residence, Thomas Putzier. This participatory installation is an open invitation for visitors to engage in intimate conversation. The gathering will start at 1 p.m. Please see our announcement page for details.

After that, the Museum will be closed for installation until we reopen in March with a number of new exhibitions including Modern Desert Markings: an Homage to Las Vegas Area Land Art, the text-focused curation Am I Your Type, and Crowd Burst, a new mixed media photographic piece by Heather Protz. 

Admission to the Museum and all of these exhibitions and events is free. Face masks are recommended, particularly on the evening of the 27th as some of our artists and curators are hoping to bring vulnerable family members to see their work. On-campus parking is free after 1 p.m. Friday and all day on weekends. 

Our partnership program with The Neon Museum is supported in part by Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, National Endowment for the Arts, and Foundation for Contemporary Arts. Untitled (Valley High School) is supported by the Art Bridges Foundation. Notes For Tomorrow is a traveling exhibition organized and produced by Independent Curators International (ICI). The poetry readings at the closing reception are organized by the Weaving Our Cultures Arts Festival.

The Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art believes everyone deserves access to art that challenges our understanding of the present and inspires us to create a future that holds space for us all. Located on the campus of one of the most racially diverse universities in the United States, we strive to create a nourishing environment for those who continue to be neglected by contemporary art museums, including BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ groups. As the only art museum in the city of Las Vegas, we commit ourselves to leveling barriers that limit access to the arts, especially for first-time visitors. To facilitate access for low-income guests we provide free entry to all our exhibitions, workshops, lectures, and community activities. Our collection of artworks offers an opportunity for researchers and scholars to develop a more extensive knowledge of contemporary art in Southern Nevada. The Barrick Museum is part of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV).

Find Us
The Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art is located in the heart of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus. The museum is easily accessed from the west side of campus at the intersection of Harmon Avenue and University Center Drive. Drive east on East Harmon Ave until the road enters the campus and terminates in a parking lot. The Museum will be on your right, next to a desert landscape garden. Directions here. 
 
Parking
Visitors may park in metered, staff, and student spots free of charge after 7 pm on weekdays, 1 pm on Fridays, and all day Saturday.
Daily, weekly, or monthly permits can be purchased from Parking and Transportation Services.
Metered parking spaces for visitors can be found in the parking lot outside the Barrick’s entrance, along East Harmon Ave, and in the lot behind the Lied Library. Other metered green zones are available in the Cottage Grove Avenue Parking Garage and parking areas throughout campus. Download the “PayByPhone Parking” app from Google Play or the iTunes app store.
