UNLV's Department of Accounting is excited to offer free tax preparation services again this year through its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program starting February 1, 2024, through April 15, 2024. The virtual program is certified by the IRS and is available to UNLV students, faculty, staff, and their families with an annual household income of $60,000 or less.

The filing process is simple and will happen in five easy steps:

  1. Intake: Answer Questions and Submit Documents
  2. UNLV: VITA Volunteer Reviews Completed Digital Intake
  3. Interview: VITA Volunteer Calls Taxpayer to Obtain Additional Information
  4. E-Signature: Completed Tax Return is Securely Emailed to Taxpayer(s) for Review
  5. E-File: Tax Return is Filed Electronically

To get started you will need to gather the below documents: 

  • Valid driver’s license or photo identification (self & spouse’s, if applicable)
  • Social Security cards or Individual Taxpayer Identification notices/cards for you, your spouse, and your dependents
  • Birth dates for you, your spouse, and/or dependents on the return
  • All forms W-2, 1099, and information for other income received
  • A copy of last year’s tax return and information for all deductions/credits
  • Daycare payment records and daycare provider's Tax ID number
  • Checking and Savings Account and Routing number(s)
  • If filing jointly, both spouses must be present and sign the return
  • Health insurance coverage information for all members of the household (if applicable)

The completely virtual service will be provided by certified tax preparers through a secure web portal where you can upload your documents without ever leaving your home. Though the service is free, space is limited. To schedule your initial appointment email VITA@unlv.edu.
