Nam Hoang, a Ph.D. student in the laboratory of Dr. Hui Zhang from the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, won UNLV's 6th Annual Rebel Grad Slam competition on Nov. 1. Nam also was named the winner for the audience-choice award. His presentation was entitled, "HIF1A: The key to cancer growth and metastasis."
Hoang researches the HIF1A gene as the key to cancer growth and metastatis. He will represent UNLV in the Western Association of Graduate Schools’ regional three-minute thesis competition in March and in the Southwest Showdown regional three-minute thesis competition in April.
Rebel Grad Slam is an annual event hosted by the Graduate College that challenges graduate students to present their research in a condensed and compelling way using only three minutes and one slide.
In addition, the College of Sciences was recognized by the Graduate College for having the most candidates competing in the event.
