As the fall semester begins, Risk Management and Safety (RMS) wants to remind the UNLV community about the importance of creating a safe and healthy environment as campus safety is the responsibility of all employees and supervisors.  The following are helpful safety tips, guidelines, and resources: 


Quickly and efficiently contact RMS about safety issues (e.g., blocked fire exits) via the Safety Concern/Near Miss From. To report Police matters (e.g, to report a suspicious person loitering in the area), use the Police Services reporting form. 


Individuals operating carts must first complete cart safety training classes online. Only employees, student workers, documented volunteers may operate carts and please remember, the number of people may not exceed the number of seats.


Safety Data Sheets (SDS) provide information on the properties of specific hazardous materials. SDSs are available through any device connected to the campus network.


Any Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) employee operating a UNLV vehicle is required to complete the Defensive Driver Course (DDC). Sign up online or contact Julie Moos, Safety Training Officer at (702)-895-2990 to register.


Employees who experience work-related injuries have the right to seek medical treatment at an approved clinic and should immediately notify their supervisor as well as document the incident using the Notice of Injury or Occupational Disease form (C-1) supervisors must also complete the Supervisor Injury, Illness, Incident Report and any witnesses to the incident should complete the Workers Compensation Witness Form. Injured employees should not use their own medical provider due to the possible delay or denial of the worker’s compensation payment process. The only exception to initially visiting an approved medical clinic  is  emergency situations (loss of consciousness, broken bones, severe burns, etc.) where the injured employee is transported to the ER or hospital. Upon arriving at any medical facility, the employee should make medical staff aware that the injury occurred at work and request a C-4 form, which must be completed in order to file a workers’ compensation claim.

UNLV’s secure file transfer should be used to send any worker’s compensation documents containing sensitive information (such as social security numbers) and other personal or medical information to the workers’ compensation email address’ compensation documents can also be securely  faxed electronically to the Workers Compensation efax at 702-895-5227.

UNLV transitioned to a Smoke-Free Campus on August 15, 2022 and now prohibits smoking of any kind, including the use of  electronic smoking devices, and all tobacco products.  UNLV Faculty, Staff, students, clients, contractors, vendors, visitors, lessees, and individuals residing on  campus must comply with this policy at all times.  Click here for more information on the UNLV Smoke-Free Campus.  Click here to view the policy.


Candles and open flames are prohibited  in offices and  dorms.  Connecting multiple power strips known as daisy chaining is prohibited, as is the use of extension cords which are not on a temporary basis in lieu of permanent electrical wiring. 


RMS continues to update its library of online safety training classes, which are available to all UNLV employees and students 24/7.
