Honors College junior Sophia Quinton survived childhood leukemia to thrive as an undergraduate planning to pursue an M.D.-Ph.D. with a focus on cancer research. Her dedication to a goal she set in middle school has led her to UNLV’s bioinformatics lab, where Quinton joins a worldwide collaborative effort to analyze data from the Cancer Genome Atlas. Besides being a research assistant, Quinton has coauthored two papers, mentored other students, and worked as an undergraduate teaching assistant in microbiology. Her achievements have been rewarded with the competitive and prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, one of only 211 awarded nationally in 2018.
