Thanks to eight-year-old Hailey Dawson’s perseverance, UNLV engineers and students’ creativity, a Bleacher Report tweet, and Major League Baseball’s heart, a little girl with a 3-D printed hand achieved her dream of throwing out the first pitch in every MLB park this spring and summer. The Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering has been working with Hailey since she was five to provide a robotic hand she could use to compensate for the effects of Poland Syndrome, which left fingers on her right hand underdeveloped. She recently completed her journey, which has also helped other families find ways to help their children through 3-D printing and robotics.
