Three years ago, the Lincy Institute at UNLV headed efforts to increase the number of trained professionals who can recognize and treat people dealing with addictive behaviors. The effort, funded by a multimillion dollar grant from the U.S. the Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Health Services Administration, works with professionals beyond nurses and social workers who are traditionally associated with helping alcohol and drug abusers. So far the Lincy Institute’s Southern Nevada Addictive Disorders Training Project has prepared nearly 1,400 professionals and students to recognize substance use disorders and get individuals connected with care, treatment, and recovery support, extending Nevada’s existing network to combat this pervasive problem.
