Sometimes a bargain is really a bargain. UNLV researchers surveyed produce at 14 local dollar stores and 40 traditional food outlets for color, cleanliness, freshness, and firmness. The study found the quality of fruit and vegetables at dollar stores was the same as grocery stories, although the variety was not as extensive. The findings are especially good news for the 17.3 million people nationwide who live in food deserts, low-income areas more than one mile from grocery stores.
