An international team of scientists, including UNLV biologist Brian Hedlund, formally unveiled a system for naming the majority of the world'ss microorganisms. The SeqCode, reported in the journal Nature Microbiology, presents a formal path to finally name the 99% of known prokaryotes - single-celled microorganisms like bacteria - that aren't currently eligible for naming. It will improve how scientists categorize, communicate, and compare data about newly discovered microorganisms.
