Jean Nidetch Women's Center
A Resource for Everyone |
Jean Nidetch, Benefactor
The UNLV Jean Nidetch Women’s Center has established itself as
a resource center on the UNLV campus, committed to providing services
and programs, which empower all students to achieve academic, personal,
and professional goals.
The Center is a point-of-entry for students, faculty, staff, alumni,
and local community to receive information and help in a safe, supportive,
inclusive environment, sensitive to issues of concern and interest to
women. The Center encourages participation of all people, including
men, in the realization of its mission and goals.
The Center strives to ensure a campus community in which women and
men can live and work together in a mutually respectful and supportive
environment where equality, responsibility, and personal empowerment
are encouraged and fostered.
The Center is committed to raising awareness of women’s issues,
creating opportunities for personal and professional growth, and to
celebrating accomplishments of women. The Center is recognized as a
safe place where people can voice opinions and share concerns. Students,
faculty, staff, and volunteers are encouraged to engage in dialogue,
exchange viewpoints, find assistance, devote time in educationally purposeful
activities, and work together as equal partners to further institutional
goals.
In cooperation, collaboration, and affiliation with other campus, community,
and national resources, the Center addresses the following topical
areas through our programs, services, and outreach: adults returning
to school, sexual and relationship violence, personal safety, women's
health, information and referral, student health and wellness. All
programming is designed to be inclusive of people of all genders, sexual
orientations, levels of ability, and racial, ethnic, and national backgrounds.
This includes outreach to the local community as well as on-campus
activities.
The Center is successful in involving the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and
transgender community in the following ways: employing staff that are
GLBT; collaborating with campus GLBT organizations in programming; and
implementing programs for and about the GLBT community.
The Center facilitates recruitment of re-entry and non-traditional
students and provides support through groups, discussion, and activities
with a focus on student retention, leadership opportunities, and academic
success. It houses a resource library of books and videos and is a meeting
place for students and other interested groups. Additionally, it provides
accurate campus and community resource information and referral, again,
with student recruitment and retention as its’ goal.
