Delivering and Serving Hope (DASH)
DASH seeks to explore hunger and homelessness through education and service. The program is set up with learning activities/discussions, packing simple meals, and then delivery (students travel to the Rescue Mission, hand out meals, reflect, and then return to campus). After the event, we hope participants take their involvement to the next level by seeking continued involvement with this issue.
DASH is open to all UNLV students, faculty, and staff. Participants must register for each DASH individually. Individuals who register online will be guaranteed participation in the service project so we can arrange for a positive, coordinated experience for our volunteers and our community partners; thank you for understanding that walk-ups will be welcomed only if space is available.
Student Union, in the eating bar under the stairs
3 to 4 p.m. — sandwich making on campus
4 to 6:30 p.m. — delivery
Participants make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and pack them into bags with fruit and granola bars or bags of chips. There are only 40 spots available for each DASH and they go fast, so please register early. DASH supplies are funded by the Office of Civic Engagement and Diversity; we welcome donations of unopened peanut butter, jelly, bread, individually packaged chips/granola bars.
Meals are distributed at the Las Vegas Rescue Mission. Delivery is often the most rewarding part of DASH, as it allows direct contact with the community. Limited transportation is provided by the University, so sign up early on the Involvement Center in MyUNLV. (Participants who have attended delivery before may be asked to offer their place to someone who has not delivered before.) If individuals are willing to drive themselves and/or carpool to the site, additional participation can be welcomed!
If your organization would like to participate in an already-scheduled DASH, you must be in contact with program staff in advance (firstname.lastname@example.org) to verify that there is room since this program is in high demand. Your organization members must also:
- sign up individually in advance on the Involvement Center in MyUNLV
- provide donations of goods to make lunches (peanut butter, jelly, and/or individually packaged granola bars, chips or crackers).
Your organization members must sign up in advance on the Involvement Center in MyUNLV. And your organization or members must provide donations of goods to make lunches (peanut butter, jelly, and/or individually packaged granola bars, chips or crackers).
If your organization would like to sponsor your own DASH event at a different date and time, please contact email@example.com. Your organization will be responsible for marketing, funding, and delivery of the lunches; we can help get you information and resources to do this in partnership with the Las Vegas Rescue Mission.
