Matthew Schwartz, MD

1996 Biology Graduate

A Rebel through and through, Schwartz credits UNLV with providing him a strong foundation to be a successful medical student. A love of the Las Vegas community is why he returned to practice medicine.

Growing up:

I grew up in Southern California, but moved to Las Vegas in 1990 with my family when my dad opened a new business. I graduated from Valley High School in 1991.

Why UNLV?

I loved Las Vegas and still do, and realized I could get a first class education at a great school without going into debt.

Graduated from UNLV:

1996 with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology.

Additional education:

I received my Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the University of Nevada School of Medicine in 2001. I then completed my internship in internal medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital in 2002. In 2006, I completed my residency training in radiation oncology at McGill University Health Center in Montreal where I was Chief Resident.

Why did you choose the area of study that you did?

I always liked science and knew I wanted to go to medical school. UNLV had a very strong program that prepared me for getting accepted into medical school and succeeding in post-secondary education.

Where do you currently work?

I am a radiation oncologist with Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada, the largest multispecialty oncology group in Nevada. I help patients fight cancer every day, which is both challenging and rewarding.

Where do you live?

Henderson, Nevada.

How did UNLV help prepare you?

UNLV gave me a strong foundation to be a successful medical student, which has transitioned well into a successful career as a physician. During my time at UNLV, I participated in research, was active in a fraternity, and held leadership positions in the Association of Pre-Health Professionals. All of these activities helped me immensely to lead me on the right path to become a doctor.

Why did you choose to return to Las Vegas to practice medicine?

Las Vegas is my home and I love the community and its people. I wanted to be able to apply my professional training to a community where I have a connection. Like many Las Vegans, I appreciate all that this city has to offer in terms of outdoor activities such as Mount Charleston, Red Rock, and Lake Mead. My dream is to go snow skiing in the morning at Mount Charleston, boating in the afternoon at Lake Mead, and hit the golf course in the early evening, all in one day. The amazing weather, restaurants, shopping, entertainment, ease of access to an international airport, and quality of life is what makes Las Vegas unique and is what brought me back home. I wanted to be able to help people in my community get well, so that they can get back to enjoying the many great things that this city has to offer.

Advice for students:

Dream big. You are only limited by your imagination as to what you can achieve in life. UNLV has the resources for students to be successful in whatever career they choose, you just need to be proactive to make the most of your college experience and take advantage of the opportunities available to you. What is great about UNLV is that you can get a high-quality education in an environment that is small enough that you have the ability to get to know your professors, advisors, and faculty. Having the opportunity to make connections and stand out among your peers is really important when choosing a school.

Outside of work:

I believe strongly in the importance of fitness, exercise, and nutrition as well as a balanced work and home life. In my free time, I enjoy running, skiing, and working out. To help relieve stress, I enjoy hiking and taking in the natural beauty of Las Vegas along with my wife and two girls.

Anything else?

I feel very fortunate to have had such a great experience at UNLV and now to practice medicine in Las Vegas. I enjoy what this community has to offer and I am proud to raise my family here in Las Vegas. Go Rebels!
