Marilyn McKinney is an Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 1985 in Elementary Education, specializing in reading. A former elementary school teacher, she has also worked with struggling readers as a Title I Reading Teacher and in the University of Iowa's Summer Residential Program. At UNLV she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in literacy education and has coordinated several collaborative field-based programs. She is currently Elementary Coordinator for the Urban Teaching Partnership (UTP) Program and serves as Co-director for the Southern Nevada Writing Project. Research interests include portfolio self-assessment (incorporating electronic portfolios of preservice teachers), teacher change and beliefs, and field-and child-focused teacher education. Recent publications related to these lines of research have appeared in Teaching and Teacher Education, Journal of Reading Education, Teacher Education Quarterly, and Action in Teacher Education.
