FTP (File Transfer Protocol)

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is the method for uploading files to a web server. For example, a web site (or components of) have been created on the local server or PC and are ready for publishing, then FTP is used to send it to the server so that the web site can be viewed on the World Wide Web.

When working on a PC a good program to use is CuteFTP. This is a shareware program and can be downloaded from www.tucows.com. Typed into the search "CuteFTP" and download to c:/program files.

Installing CuteFTP

  1. Using the START Button select RUN and BROWSE.
  2. Look in c:/program files/GlobalSCAPE/CuteFTP. Double click cutftp32 icon.
  3. Move through the Install Wizard. Upon completion, CuteFTP will be installed and a shortcut will appear on the desktop.

Configuring the Site Manager

Site Manager is the location, which stores the information about where your files are going to (the server name) where you keep the local files, your user name and password. Once this is completed, you will not have to reenter the information again.

  1. Double click on the CuteFTP shortcut icon on the desktop.
  2. Pull down the FTP menu and select Connection Wizard
  3. Walk through the Connection Wizard.
  4. Your ISP is OTHER
  5. Enter the name of your site, ie: Dr. Smith's Web Site.
  6. Enter the FTP host address, which you were given from UNLV computing services.ie:ftp://www.unlv.edu
  7. Enter your user name and password (which you were given from UNLV computing services).
  8. Enter the location you will be storing the data files on the local server or PC.
  9. If you will always be connected to the Internet, check: connect to this site automatically.
  10. Click on finish
