Entering Simple Formulas

Formulas are simply equations that calculate new values from existing values. Excel allows the user to enter formulas into a cell and have the results displayed in the worksheet.

  1. Select the cell in which you wish to enter the formula.
  2. Type an equal sign (=) in the formula bar.
IMPORTANT: If you do NOT type in an equal sign, Excel will NOT be able to calculate the formula.
  3. Type in the equation you want to calculate. We chose a formulas for addition.
  4. Press the Enter key or click on the Enter button.

  6. Use the same procedure for entering formulas for subtraction, multiplication, and division. Remember: Make sure you type in the equal sign (=) before you enter the equation.
    Subtraction (-): =50-10
    Multiplication (*): =5*6
