Quick Start Guide to Macromedia's FireworksImporting imagesYou can bring images into Fireworks from a variety of programs. One of the easiest methods is to copy and paste from any number of programs-including Web browsers. You can also select Insert-Image from the menu to select image files you already have saved. Screen-captureAn amazingly useful and very underutilized tool at everyone's fingertips is the screen capture. All computers using the Windows operating system have a screen-capture function available. Regardless of the program you are running, you can press the "Print Screen" button on your keyboard (often found next to the F12 button). This will make and image of your screen and place it on your clipboard (this is where the operating system places any information that your cut or copy). To insert it into another program, simply press CTRL-V (or select Paste from the Edit menu). If you prefer to only copy the active window hold down the Alt key and press Print Screen. By pressing "Alt" and "Print Screen" while viewing my Open File dialogue box, I was able to capture the image above. I then pressed Ctrl-V to paste it into my document. Check out Wazza's Screen Capture Utilities (http://members.ozemail.com.au/~wazmac/software/) for more information, including Macintosh OS equivalents. ResourcesHelp pages Probably the most useful and most frequently overlooked resource is application help pages. Granted they aren't the most exciting pieces of literature, but they are truly helpful. This is especially true for specific questions and context specific help (the Help button that appears in dialog boxes that you are unsure of how to respond to). Check the Fireworks help pages when you are stuck. Yale Web Style Manual Available both on the Web and in paperback this publication is very practical and easy to understand. http://info.med.yale.edu/caim/manual/ HTML Help Dreamweaver is great at allowing you to do both WYSIWIG (What you see is . . . ) and actual HTML coding while developing your site. If you are interested in the HTML - this site is a great resource. http://www.htmlhelp.org UNLV Assistance Where you go for help at UNLV depends upon the type of site you want to develop. If the site is deemed official (e.g., department page, office, program, or institute) and you would like it to be a part of the UNLV Web site, the information you will need can be found at: http://websvcs.unlv.edu/ For Web sites of a less official nature (e.g., a site your
courses and/or dissemination of scholarly materials) you can
use your System Computing Services account (e.g., pioneer
or farrallon). For a description using these accounts for
Web development see: http://www.scs.nevada.edu/cs/web/ |
