Oboe Studies at UNLV

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas offers many wonderful opportunities for an oboist who plans to major or minor in music, as well as for those who wish to major in other subjects. Students may audition for the University Symphony Orchestra, the University Wind Orchestra, the University Symphonic Band, the Morelli Wind Quintet, or any of the numerous other chamber music groups.

Each music major receives a one hour private lesson every week of the semester. Participation in weekly repertoire classes allows students to explore orchestral and chamber music repertoire as well as extra time to learn about making and refining reeds. Non-music majors may also take lessons for credit and participate in all oboe studio activities.

UNLV recognizes the special needs of the double reed player. Each double reed student is given access to a special "reed room", where reeds may be worked on and equipment stored. Specialized precision reed equipment is also made available in the reed room expressly for UNLV student use. UNLV also has quality oboes and english horns available for students who do not yet have personal instruments.

Scholarships and participation awards are available for music majors, and participation awards are available for non-majors who take part in two large ensembles. UNLV offers a variety of degrees at the undergraduate level, as well as Masters degrees in Applied Oboe or Woodwind Doubling and the Doctor of Musical Arts in Applied Oboe.
