Grades K-2.

Georgie has outgrown his baby bed, and it is time to get a bigger one. Georgie and Frank go shopping, and find a magical bed in a used furniture store. Georgie's granny thinks it is too old, too dirty, and too used, but Georgie and Frank clean it up, and find magical words carved into the bed. Each night, when Georgie says the magical words, he flies in his bed to incredible adventures. We all discover that sand in the bed in the morning means that Georgie has been finding treasure on a sandy island, and a wet bed in the morning means that Georgie has been playing with dolphins. At last it is time for Georgie to go on vacation, and his granny seizes the chance to get him a better bed. When Georgie finds out, he races to the dump to rescue his Magic Bed. Readers are promised that if they find their own magical words, they can also go on adventures at night. The illustrations are colorful line drawings of lovable characters and simple locales. This book would be ideal for a read aloud,
particularly when a child is being teased for bed-wetting. Georgie's search for the rest of the magical word could become a lesson on beginning and ending sounds, and a classroom innovation on students' dream adventures would be a natural outgrowth of this book.
