Maccarone, Grace. Magic Matt and the Cat. Illus. by Norman Bridwell. 30 p.
Scholastic Inc. 2003. $3.99. ISBN 0-43940568-8.
Grades K-1

This is a simple book for early readers that has short sentences and a lot of repetitive basic sight words. Even some of my most reluctant readers felt confident reading this book. The book is about a boy who tries to use magic to make a cat and ends up making a variety of other animals instead. My students enjoyed this book and had fun predicting the animals the boy would make. This book focuses on "-at" words and would work well with a study of short "a" words. The book also includes 2 pages of rhyming and fluency activities at the end.
