In August 1996, Premier UNLV was created as a major kick-off event to excite students about the upcoming year and connect them to the REBEL experience. Premier UNLV has grown into a cherished tradition and is embraced by all students, new and returning. The event was created by the Office of Civic Engagement & Diversity, formerly known as the Office of Student Involvement Activities, which is a part of the Division of Student Life (the name of the Office in 1996 was Campus Community Development). While Rebel Events Board coordinates the planning and production of the event each year, Premier UNLV is a collaborative event, including support from many offices and organizations (e.g., CSUN Student Government, the Office of the President, Athletics, UNLV Marching Band, Campus Housing).
The Premier Name
Why is the kick-off event called premier? The answer is two-fold:
- UNLV is considered a premier urban university
- As a kickoff event, it serves as a premier of the year (similar to a television season premier).
Each year, students have the opportunity to stand in a different letter of the UNLV formation as the aerial photo is taken. Freshmen are asked to stand in the “U,” sophomores in the “N,” juniors in the “L,” and seniors complete the “V.”
