During the month of April, the Barrick Museum will kickoff its occasional Barrick Films series with New York based filmmaker Deville Cohen.

Cohen’s films POISON (2011) and Cabbage Tree  (2007) will be shown inside of the Barrick’s auditorium during the following:

  • Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
  • Saturdays from Noon - 5 p.m.

Cohen combines elements of theater, sculpture, college, and cinematography in his films as he explores the ways in which individuals interact with their surrounding environment, both imagined and physically present. Sets, characters, and props become entangled in psychic dramas saturated with humor, desire, and anxiety. The protagonists of POISON, an 8-ball and a die, meet at a gas station and hit the road, meeting various natural and man-made scenes, composed entirely of photocopies, paper clips, ladders, and other improvisations. Cohen has cast various colors of lace to portray oil, water, and blood, vital liquids that are generated, collected and depleted as the piece unfolds. Taking a cue from Shakespeare’s tragedies in which malice serves as a dramatic tool and functions as a nearly sculptural substance, Cohen’s POISON flows with sensuous fluidity.

“We’re excited to kickoff the Barrick Films series with the work of Deville Cohen,” said managing director Aurore Giguet, “Cohen’s use of black-and-white Xerox images create a fragile delicate environment that reflects on the collapsible nature of human logic and relations. Something I think we can easily relate to in Las Vegas.”
