New Faculty Orientation, 2013
Posted: July 19, 2013
It gives me great pride and pleasure in my capacity as Executive Vice President and Provost to welcome you to the UNLV faculty and invite you to the New Faculty Orientation to be held on Thursday August 15, 2013, from 8am to 4pm in the Goldfield Room of Lied Library.
The schedule for the orientation is posted below along with an online RSVP form. The form will ask you to provide a brief biography and expression of your research and teaching interests that will be shared with your new colleagues at orientation.
This fall is a particularly important time in UNLV's history to be joining our faculty. You are part of a very strong cohort of 86 new academic faculty. Along with the large cohort of 76 new faculty who started in the fall of 2012, you constitute nearly one fifth of our academic faculty. Collectively the faculty hired in the past two years are our most intellectually and demographically diverse group, and you add greatly to UNLV's academic strength. Your presence enhances our ability to lead southern Nevada's economic, intellectual, and cultural development. You were recruited for your demonstrated research achievements and your potential to achieve much more, as well as your evident commitment to excellence in education. Above all, you bring to campus a dynamism and energy that we believe will be a crucial ingredient in our push to achieve a Carnegie designation as a Very High Research university (what we call our "Tier One" initiative). We are eager to involve you in our innovative new general education curriculum for undergraduates, in our emerging collaborative and interdisciplinary graduate programs, and in our leadership in our unique community and region.
I hope that by now your departments and colleges have integrated you successfully into our faculty, but if you have any questions at all about your onboarding experience, please don't hesitate to call upon my office. Several very important steps to take prior to the orientation, if you have not already, are the following: first, to request your UNLV Lotus Notes email through your department or college; second, to visit your department or college office to sign your I-9 form, which will have to be witnessed in person; and third, to schedule and complete an orientation session on compensation and benefits with our Human Resources office. HR orientations are offered weekly throughout the summer and may be scheduled by calling their office directly at (702) 895 -3504. The HR orientation and the completion of your hiring packet with the signing of your I-9 will also enable you to obtain your UNLV identification card, which will be necessary for use of many campus facilities including the recreation center and libraries.
Once again I look forward to welcoming you and to introducing you to President Smatresk, his cabinet, my academic leadership team of deans, vice provosts and senior staff -- and above all, to our faculty. Please join us on August 15, and RSVP using the link below.
