The 2030 Challenge Workshop Series
.
Climate Change, Survival and Architecture
Dr. Sue Roaf
Workshop 3 of 3, November 7th, 2006
On
Tuesday, November 7th at 8:30 AM, Dr. Sue Roaf will explain how one
traditional desert society in central Iran successfully adapts to their
severe, hot and arid desert biome. Dr. Roaf will examine the longevity of
this indigenous civilization and identify those elements which most readily
relate our condition here in Las Vegas, and yet help this native culture to
not only integrate with its natural context to establish a lifestyle of
luxury devoid of fossil fuels. Dr. Roaf will then work with the workshop
attendees to gain an understanding of what they feel to be the future
challenges the city faces in terms of our lifestyles and the buildings we
live in. Finally, Dr. Roaf will work with attendees to see how they might be
able to implement action plans in their own lives, and in their own
communities, that make them feel less vulnerable to the changes we all face
in a world with a changing climate and rapidly rising oil prices. The
workshop is designed to be a challenging event that will help progress an
ecologically-responsible agenda for buildings and communities in the Las Vegas
Valley.
