Think Before You Click Seminars

As part of Think Before You Click, the Office of Information Technology offered several panel discussions to help faculty and staff understand security issues in more depth.

All discussions were informal and led by participants from a variety of backgrounds. UNLV personnel shared their real-life stories about security problems and technicians offered their best advice for solutions.

The more seminars attended, the greater the chances of winning one of three laptop giveaways. Lunch was served during the first half hour of each session. All sessions were held in CBC B-117 (the OIT "Large Conference Room").

In less than 18 months, over 750 UNLV employees have been victims of cyber crimes and a few have agreed to share their stories. Technicians will share their expertise about malware, viruses, phishing, and many other scams that hide behind links. This class is an introduction to information security.

How do you secure computers that are used by several people in the office, including students and staff? What is the best way to share files and access systems like SIS and Advantage? What type of games and programs should users access? At this seminar, OIT will provide several resources for managing office desktop computers.
College campuses have become attractive for cyber criminals looking for data. At UNLV, we need to be sure that student and personnel data is kept out of the hands of criminals. Join administrators and staff who share the lessons they learned from the security breach in spring of 2005. Panel members will answer such questions as: What should every administrator or director know about data security? How much student data should be stored in databases? Who should be given access to systems like SIS or HRMS? How should the employee identification number be used on campus?
Stop by this seminar and we’ll tell you why. Slow computers are usually suffering from the damages of malicious software. To avoid losing important files and data, attend this seminar to learn why your computer is slow, how to prevent it from crashing, and how to back up your files just incase. We’ll show you the root causes of slow machines that are within your control and won’t cost you a dollar.
