SLIP/PPP ACCESS POLICY

The Committee believes that SLIP/PPP access is not an entitlement and that providing this service should be explored on an experimental basis. 32 new modems should be used for this service.

Access should be available to Faculty/Professional Staff and Graduate Students.

  1. Faculty accounts will be renewed on the same or similar schedule as other computing accounts
  2. Graduate student accounts will expire at the end of each term and must be renewed.

Multiple levels of account "time" will be available

  1. Basic account will have 4 hours of access time within a 24 hour period
  2. When "need"* is demonstrated access time within a 24 hour period may be increased to 8 or 12 hours.
  3. The special extended-time accounts are for a period of one year and then must be renewed or they revert to a basic account.

Undergraduate access may be facilitated but at some cost to the user. The University should explore the use of a third party provider to supply this service.

Use and access will be monitored to provide guidance for future policies and policy changes.

* Need is defined as special research, teaching or other components of the individual's professional responsibilities the require Internet access. The applicant must state the nature of the research, teaching or other professional responsibilities and why the additional access time is required. A committee or individual will be designated by the Vice Provost of Information Technology to make the determination of need. Management of the accounts will be handled in the same or similar manner as regular accounts.
