Preparing Your Computer for WebCampus (WebCT Vista)

Please perform the following in order to prepare your computer for using WebCampus

  1. Add WebCampus as a trusted site (Internet Explorer users only)
  2. Run WebCT Check Browser
  3. Confirm that Java 6.0 is installed, or install free plug-in

 


#1 Add WebCampus as a trusted site (Internet Explorer users only)

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Click on Tools from the Menu bar and select Internet Options


  3. Click on the Security Tab .
  4. Click on the Trusted Sites icon.
  5. Click on Sites... button


  6. From the Trusted sites window, enter https://webcampus.nevada.edu in the Add this Web site to the zone textbox.
  7. Click Add.


  8. Click OK.
  9. Click OK again.

 

For Internet Explorer 7.0 users, you will also want to change the additional setting to allow downloads for files within WebCampus:

    1. Open Internet Explorer.
    2. Click on Tools from the and select Internet Options
    3. Click on the Security Tab .
    4. In the Security level for this zone section, click on Custom Level
    5. Scroll down to the Downloads heading
    6. Set Automatic prompting for file downloads to Enable

    7. Click OK



#2 Run Check Browser

  1. Log in to WebCampus
  2. Click on the link in the top right hand corner of WebCampus titled Check Browser to see if you have all of the necessary plugins and a validated browser to use WebCampus.

**Be sure to allow popups from webcampus.nevada.edu.



#3 Confirm that Java plug-in is installed and enabled; or, install java.

Confirming that Java plugin is installed and enabled

  1. Click on your Check Browser link in WebCampus.
  2. The last item listed in the popup Window will display which version of Java is installed. It should be Java 6.0. You should also follow the steps below if you are running Windows to be sure that older versions of Java are not still installed on your computer.

 

ATTENTION: Microsoft Windows 2000/XP Users Only

If your browser freezes or locks up when you try to log out of WebCampus or the My Computer Applet does not appear, you may have an older version of Java installed. Follow the steps below to resolve the issue.

 Step 1: Remove older versions of Java and install supported version:

  1. Close all internet browser windows (Netscape, Internet Explorer, etc.) that may be open.
  2. Click on your Start Menu (bottom left hand corner of your computer)
  3. Click on Control Panel
  4. Click on Add or Remove Programs
  5. Look for Java and/or J2SE Runtime Environment (List should be alphabetical). Click on Java and click on the Remove button. (You will want to remove all versions of Java that you have installed.)
  6. Restart your computer if prompted to do so.
  7. Return to https://webcampus.nevada.edu and wait for the check browser window to pop up. Click on the link provided under Java Check.

    (If the pop up does not appear, click here to access WebCampus' plug-ins page or go to http://www.java.com to download Java.
  8. Click on the Java Get It Now icon [see image below])

  9. Scroll down to the list of Java versions, select Accept License Agreemnt just above the table of links, then click on the first link to download and install the supported version of Java. Java Download
  10. Click Run (2x)
  11. And perform the typical install

 Step 2: Disable automatic update for Java :

  1. Log in to WebCampus
  2. A Java icon (blue coffee cup with red steam) should appear in the bottom right hand corner of your computer. Right click this icon with your mouse and select Open Control Panel.
  3. Click on the Updates tab.
  4. Uncheck the box that says "Check for updates automatically"
