File Management | Preparing Files

WebCT Pages and Tools:

Pages:
organizer page icon
Organizer Page:
Allows designers or instructors to group related WebCT tools on one page for ease of access (example: Communication Tools).
single page icon
Single Page:
Allows the instructor to post materials as stand alone documents (example: a syllabus created using Dreamweaver).
url/links icon
URL/Links:
Allows the instructor to add an icon linking either to a local file or an external Uniform Resource Locator (URL).

Course Content:
syllabus icon
Syllabus:
Allows the instructor to create a syllabus containing sections for: course information, instructor information, course golas, policies, and more. If the instructor chooses, they can also use the syllabus tool to add a syllabus from a pre-created file.

Content Module:
Allows the instructor to create and organize course materials (lectures, notes, etc) with the ability to make additional features available to students, such as, glossary, goals, note taking abiliites and more.

Export Content Module:
A complete content module can be compiled into a single compressed (.zip) file through the export feature in WebCT. This .zip file can then be imported into another WebCT course. All files and the structure of the content module will be copied over to the new course.

Glossary:
Allows the instructor to create a course glossary that can be accessed through the Glossary hyperlink or by clicking on a keywork that has been hyperlinked.
 
camera icon
Image Database:
Allows the designer to create a searchable image archive that allows association of annotations and free text with each image.
 
index icon

Index:
Allows the instructor to define key words for a particular page, to be included in the course index.

 

Content Utilities:
Search:
Allows the student and instructor to explore a course for specific informatin wtihin the index, titles, headings, or all text (.htm, .html, and .txt only).
 
Compile:
Allows students and instructor to compile several pages from a content module into one file. This is useful for priinting course content but is only functional if .htm, .html., or .txt files are used.
 
Resume Course:
The Resume Course link in the WebCT toolbar lets students pick up at the last place they were in the course path pages.
 
CD-ROM:
Allows users to access specific course files from a Compact Disk in their computer drive instead of downloading them from the WebCT server. This helps to avoid a potentially long download time of large multimedia files, especially over modems.
 

Communication:
Discussions:
Allows asynchronous communication among all course participants.
 
Mail:
Allows private messages, with or without attachments, to be sent from one participant to another within the course.
 
Chat:
Allows real-time text conversations with users of the enrolled course or other courses using the tool. It can be used for on-line, interactive sessions such as office hours.
 
Whiteboard:
Allows groups of users to dynamically share a common graphical palette in real-time.
 

Calendar:
Provides a way for the instructor and students to exchange information about class events. Information can be made private or public.

 
Student Tips:
Allows the instructor to display course tips, or notices to students.
 

Evaluation and Activity:

Quiz/Survey:
Quizzes can be written by the instructor and delivered on-line with options for automatic grading, feedback, and more. Similar to quizzes, survey questions are contructed using the Question Database. However, responses to surveys are anonymous.

Auto Grading Short Answer Questions
Short answer questions for quizzes in WebCT can be set up to automatically grade no matter what answer the student provides. This design for a "practice" quiz gives students an opportunity to write and receive credit for the activity; at the same time, it gives them feedback that they can use to prepare for an exam.

Export Quizzes, Surveys, and Question Database:
ALL quizzes, surveys, and questions in a course's question database can be compiled into a single compressed (.zip) file through the export feature in WebCT. This .zip file can then be imported into another WebCT course.

 
Self Test:
Allows the instructor to create multiple-choice review questions. Immediate feedback can be added to the question and they are not graded.
 
Assignments:
Allows the instructor to distribute course assignments to students. Features include assignment description, maximum grade, a utility for attaching files that are related to the assignment and student submission of completed assignments.
 
Student Presentations:
Provides students, or groups of students, with authoring privileges so that they can upload per-prepared web pages to their area for viewing by the instructor and class.
 
Student Homepages:
Each student can create a homepage for view by others in the same course. This tool encourages students to share information about themselves and what they know as it assists in creating a collaborative community.
 

Student Tools:
My Progress:
Allows students to view a history of which pages they have visited and the number of times visited.
 
My Grades:
Allows students to view his or her own grades as entered by the instructor or teaching assistant.
 
Language Selector:
Allows users to choose available languages for the designer or student view of the course. Language settings apply only to the WebCT course interface. WebCT cannot translate course content created by instructors.
English is the only language currently available.

Student Enrolled and Development Course Comparisons :
Confused about what type of course you should be using? This tip sheet will outline the major differences between a student enrolled course and a development course. These are the two types of course shells that are available to instructors using WebCT.
 
Backup/Restore:
Instructions for moving an entire course from one WebCT course shell to another. This is the necessary process for moving your course from Development to Production.
