Auto-Grading Short Answer Questions:

A WebCT Quiz Design for Writing Prompts and Model Answers

Objective: With the renewed interest in getting students to respond to questions or topics in writing, you may be looking for ways to prepare students for written exams without having to grade every response. To accomplish that, you can publish a quiz in WebCT that --

  • contains writing prompts or questions,
  • enables the students to write any response for which they get credit (automatically), and
  • allows students to view a model response in the test results.

And, your students will see the results right away, without the delay associated with grading paragraph answers. This design for a "practice" quiz gives students an opportunity to write and receive credit for the activity; at the same time, it gives them feedback that they can use to prepare for an exam.

Directions:

  1. From the Quiz Tool (see Quiz Tool Tipsheet), select Question Database.
  2. Add a new Category for "Writing Prompts" if needed. As always, you may also use an existing Category of questions if you have already organized the Question Database for your course.
  3. Under the Options: Questions select "Short answer" for Create new question and click [Go].
  4. Using the example below enter a Title, Question (i.e., a writing prompt) and complete the Answer and General feedback fields as illustrated.

  1. Then Save the question. You can then add this question and others like it to a "practice" quiz that students can take to prepare for an exam in which their responses to paragrah questions are read and scored manually.
  2. Finally, after building the quiz remember release the results immediately AND to enable option f) under "Student results display" in Edit quiz settings as shown below. Otherwise, students will not see the "model" answer in the results.

Summary:

Using the Short answer question to prompt students to write and its "regular expression" feature to auto-grade the responses, you reward students for engaging in the learning activity but save yourself the time of having to grade every response. Students want opportunities to "practice" for written exams and see how well their responses match your expectations. Giving them a model answer in the General feedback serves that purpose and enables them, through the process of reviewing the quiz results, to prepare for a more rigorous written exam that you will grade manually.
