WebCT Faculty Tip Sheets Save a Word Document as an HTML FileWhy should I save my files as HTML? Can't I just post the Word documents? You can simply post the Word documents, as any type of file can be uploaded to WebCT. However, not all file types will be able to be viewed from the platform. Because WebCT is web-based, hypertext markup language files (.html or . htm) and web-viewable graphics (.gif and . jpg files) will be viewable in the browser. The viewability of other file types will depend on the settings on the user's computer browser. Some files must be downloaded to be viewed in another software program, and others will be opened in a "plug-in" specified by your settings. To ease your students' pains, it is considerate to post HTML files. Note: While instructions are given for converting Word documents, this is NOT the recommended method of generating HTML files. When Word converts files to HTML, conversions generate larger files full of useless code and conversions are often messy. OIT recommends that users create files using an HTML editor, such as Dreamweaver or Netscape Composer. Netscape Composer, part of the Netscape Communicator package, can be downloaded for free from netscape.com. Composer has a user-friendly interface that greatly resembles a word processor.
