Other File Options
To edit files:
You can edit .html, .htm, and .txt files in Manage Files. Note: Unless you are familiar with HTML, editing the code directly is strongly discouraged. Use the HTML Editor.
- From the Control Panel, click Manage Files. The Manage Files screen appears.
- Under Folders and Files, click the name of the file that you want to edit. The Edit File screen appears.
- Do one of the following:
- In the File content text box:
- Edit the content of the file. You can format the text by adding HTML tags.
- For easier viewing, resize the text box by adjusting the Width and Height controls and clicking Resize. Note: Adjusting the size of the text box has no effect on the file's content.
- To edit the content and format the text using an editor, click HTML editor.
- Click Save. The Manage Files screen appears.
To copy files:
You can copy one or more files from the current folder to another folder.
- From the Control Panel, click Manage Files. The Manage Files screen appears.
- Under Folders and Files, select the file(s) that you want to copy.
- Under Options: Files, click Copy. The Copy Files screen appears displaying the file(s) to be copied.
- From the Copy the selected files to drop-down list, select a destination folder.
- Click Copy. The Manage Files screen appears.
To move files:
- From the Control Panel, click Manage Files. The Manage Files screen appears.
- Under Folders and Files, select the file(s) that you want to move.
- Under Options: Files, click Move. The Move Files screen appears displaying the file(s) to be moved.
- From the Move the selected files to drop-down list, select a destination folder.
- Click Move. The Manage Files screen appears.
To rename a file:
Note: You cannot rename folders in the WebCT-Files folder.
- From the Control Panel, click Manage Files. The Manage Files screen appears.
- Under Folders and Files, select the file(s) that you want to rename.
- Under Options: Files, click Rename. The Rename File screen appears.
- In the New name text box, enter a new name for the file, taking care to ensure that the file extension is part of the new name. Filenames can contain any of the following: a-z, A-Z, 0-9, comma, space, _, &, ( ), -, . , and ~. The following cannot be used as the first character in the filename: dash (-), tilde (~), and space. The following cannot be used as the last character in the filename: period (.) and space.
- Click Rename. The Manage Files screen appears.
To delete files:
You can delete one or more files from Manage Files. Warning: Deleted files cannot be retrieved.
- From the Control Panel, click Manage Files. The Manage Files screen appears.
- Under Folders and Files, select the file(s) that you want to delete.
- Under Options: Files, click Delete. The Delete Files screen appears, displaying the file(s) to be deleted.
- Verify the files that will be deleted. Warning: Deleted files cannot be retrieved.
- Click Delete. The Manage Files screen appears.
To download files:
Files must be downloaded individually. If you want to download multiple files, zip them first and then download the zipped file. For instructions on zipping, please see the Zipping and Unzipping Files tip sheet.
- From the Control Panel, click Manage Files. The Manage Files screen appears
- Under Folders and Files, select the file that you want to download.
- Under Options: Files, click Download. The Download File screen appears.
- Click Download. Your computer's file download dialog box appears.
- Follow the instructions in the dialog box to save the file to your computer.
