Change Word Web Page Document Encoding

When you are creating a Web page in Word, you can specify the encoding that a browser will use to display the page. Encoding is the byte (or sequence of bytes) representing each character in an HTML or plain text file. The following instructions guide you through the process of switching encoding to Unicode (UTF-8). Unicode encoding supports all characters in all languages and is readable in Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or later and Netscape Navigator 4.0 or later.

  1. From the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Click the General tab.
  3. Click Web Options, and then click the Encoding tab.
  4. To specify the language encoding for saving the page, click Unicode (UTF-8) in the Save this document as list.
    • To save your pages in a default language encoding, select the Always save Web pages in the default encoding check box. This setting affects the current page and future pages that you save. This setting is useful if you reuse pages from other sources and want to store every page in one encoding.
    • If you're working with a Single File Web Page and you select an encoding that does not display properly in Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or 5.0, Word saves files with US-ASCII encoding.
