WebCT Faculty Tip Sheets

Exporting & Saving Content Modules

A complete content module can be compiled into a single compressed (.zip) file through the export feature in WebCT. This .zip file can then be imported into another WebCT course. All files and the structure of the content module will be copied over to the new course.

If your files within your content module are large in size, it is recommended that you zip files from your my files area and export them in smaller batches. To view instructions on how to zip your files click here.

To export a content module from your course:

  1. Click on Control Panel.
  2. Under Manage Course, click on Export Content.
  3. Choose the type of content to export. For your Content Module, select the radio button next to Content Module and use the pull down menu to select the title of your content module. Note: You can only export one content module at a time.

  4. Set destination folder to My-Files

  5. Click Continue.
A confirmation report will be generated. This may trigger some errors related to xml file lists. You can ignore these errors for now. At the end of the report, you will find the file name (with the file extension .zip). The file name of the exported content module will contain the following information: 1) Course name, 2) CMD=Content module, 3) Content module name, and 4) Date and time of export.

If you plan on downloading and importing this content module into another course, you will want to make note of the file name.

Downloading the exported content module to your computer:

  1. Go to Control Panel
  2. Click on Manage Files
  3. Select the .zip file containing 'CMD' in the title.
  4. Click the Download button from the right.
  5. Choose a location on your computer to save the file to.
  6. Click Save.

Please delete the .zip file from your WebCT's My Files area once it's been downloaded to your computer.

Instructions for importing a content module into a WebCT CE course can be found here.
