David Fott

David Fott, associate professor of political science, has been at UNLV since 1992. He received his BA from Vanderbilt University in 1983 and his AM and PhD from Harvard University in 1986 and 1993 respectively. He is the author of John Dewey: America's Philosopher of Democracy (Rowman & Littlefield, 1998) and articles on Dewey, Montesquieu, US presidential power, and Jane Austen. His current research focuses mainly on the ancient Roman philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero: he is translating Cicero's On the Republic and On the Laws into English and writing a book on Cicero's political philosophy.

At UNLV Professor Fott has taught a wide range of classes in political theory and American political thought, as well as introductory courses in American politics and political science.

Professor Fott is on sabbatical leave from July 1, 2008, to June 30, 2009, but he may be reached by e-mail.


Professor Fott is the founder and director of the Great Works Academic Certificate program at UNLV, which provides undergraduates the opportunity to take part in a conversation with some of the best thinkers of all time. Professor Stephen Rosenbaum of the Department of Philosophy is the acting director from July 1 to December 31, 2008.
