UNLV Concert Singers and Chamber ChoraleWhen: May. 3, 2013, 7:30pm - 9:30pm
Campus Location: Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall
Please join Music Director David B. Weiller and the UNLV Choral Ensembles with pianists Kanako Yamazaki and Spencer Baker as they present their final performance of the season, featuring the Chaparral High School Expressions choir.
The Expressions are an auditioned mixed vocal ensemble of 28 talented singers. The choir performs a cappella choral literature in the Las Vegas community each year, and they perform at Chaparral for many athletic events and student activities. They will perform Hodie Christus natus est by Sweelinck, Tabula rasa by Don Macdonald, and the popular spiritual Elijah Rock, arranged by Moses Hogan.
The University Concert Singers present choral gems spanning 500 years with Tu pauperum refugium by early renaissance Flemish composer Josquin des Prez, O Praise the Lord With One Consent by Handel, and an excerpt from the Coronation Mass by Mozart. Selections from the Liebeslieder Walzer (Love Song Waltzes) by Johannes Brahms, as well the humorous Animal Crackers by contemporary composer Eric Whitacre to round out the program.
The second half of the concert features the University Concert Singers and Chamber Chorale in Marvelous Musicals, a fast-paced and lighthearted entertainment of choruses, solos, and small ensembles from many styles of musical theatre. Some of the shows represented include My Fair Lady, Camelot, Candide, Fiddler on the Roof, Sweeney Todd, Ragtime, The Secret Garden, Little Women, and Avenue Q.
The university choral ensembles enjoy a reputation for vibrant performances. The choirs recently were praised for a concert described as “…glorious, yet disciplined. The choruses performed with unaffected charisma.” Annual tours have encompassed the southwestern United States as well as Hawaii, New York, Mexico, and Canada. Past highlights include holiday performances with the world-renowned Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra and participation in a massed choir performance in New York City's Carnegie Hall.
Tickets for this general seating event are priced at $10 and $8, with discounts available for seniors, military, and UNLV faculty and staff.
All students receive one free ticket with a valid ID.
