University Forum: Good Intentions are Not Enough
When: Apr. 17, 2013, 7:30pm - 8:30pmCampus Location: Marjorie Barrick Museum / Harry Reid Center
Office/Remote Location: Auditorium
Join the College of Liberal Arts in the University Forum Lecture, "Good Intentions are Not Enough: Volunteering Reconsidered" a talk by Katherine Borland, associate professor, Comparative Studies in the Humanities, Ohio State University.
International volunteering in Central America is a popular, socially valued, activity for middle class North Americans. Yet as new volunteers organize to express their cosmopolitan values by doing good in the world, it behooves them to know something of the humanitarian tradition that precedes them. Professor Borland will critically explore how short-term service organized through universities, churches and professional organizations impacts enduring social inequalities.
This event is free and open to the public.
