University Forum: Everything About Social Security Benefits

When: Dec. 5, 2013, 7:30pm - 8:30pm
Campus Location: Marjorie Barrick Museum / Harry Reid Center
Office/Remote Location: Auditorium

Please join the College of Liberal Arts for the University Forum Lecture "Everything You Need to Know About the Social Security Benefits Formula, But Don’t Even Know to Ask," a talk by Francine J. Lipman, professor, Boyd School of Law, UNLV.

Despite the broad and deep reliance on monthly Social Security benefit payments, too many of the millions of current and future beneficiaries do not understand how the government calculates the amount of the payment. Unfortunately, not understanding the formula could undermine prudent choices about the timing of benefits, spousal benefit elections, and work-versus-leisure decisions. This lecture will provide an overview of the Social Security benefit formula to facilitate more informed decision-making about retirement options.
