Addiction and combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often go hand in hand. This phenomenon has been documented as early as the Civil War. Combat exposure often results in PTSD. Many veterans use psychoactive substances as a form of self-medication to ease the symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder. It is estimated that 35–75 percent of veterans with PTSD abuse drugs and alcohol. Understanding the major issues faced by veterans is important for providing mental health services.
This event is free and open to the public.
