Talk on Sex Industry and Social Networks in ChinaWhen: Oct. 28, 2013, 11:30am - 12:30pm
Campus Location: William D. Carlson Education
Office/Remote Location: Room 218
The UNLV department of anthropology presents a talk titled "The Power of Social Networks: Conduits to Sex Work in Post-Socialist China," a talk by Yeon Jung Yu, department of anthropology, Stanford University.
Roughly six to ten million women are working in the transactional sex industry in post-socialist China and STIs have risen steeply. The booming sex industry can largely be attributed to unprecedented market-driven reforms, which have widened the economic gap between rural and urban areas. In this talk, drawing on 26 months ethnographic fieldwork in red-light neighborhoods in a tourist city in southern China, Yu describes how female migrants enter into the illegal industry. By focusing on the critical role of social networks as the initial mechanism through which female sex workers are produced, this talk will show that the analytical lens of social networks can help explain the recent phenomenon of the rapidly increasing population.
This event is free and open to the public.
