PRE-COLUMBIAN SACRIFICE: The Burden of the Elite

Pre-Columbian Sacrifice: The Burden of the Elite is an exhibition is curated by students enrolled in Gallery Practices (ART 309).  The student-produced exhibition explores the central themes of ritual sacrifice, feasting, blood letting and the ancient ballgame using artifacts from the Dr. Michael C. and Mannetta Braunstein Collection of Pre-Columbian Art.

Ritual sacrifice and bloodletting were embraced by ancient cultures throughout Central and South America. It was believed that through these rituals the practitioners could communicate with ancestors and gods. Although practiced by all levels of society this exhibition will focus on rituals and sacrifice performed by the elite class who used them to declare their connection to the sacred world.
